The Climax: A Fumble and a Fortune
In a chaotic exchange, Artie fumbles, trips, and somehow lands a knockout blow on Boris. The fight club erupts. Artie is the undisputed champion, utterly shocked by his victory.
The air in the cavernous basement of 'The Rusty Mug' was thick, so thick you could practically chew it. It tasted of stale beer, nervous sweat, and the metallic tang of something that was definitely not pizza. My knuckles throbbed, a dull, insistent ache that was rapidly becoming my new normal. Boris, all two hundred and fifty pounds of pure, unadulterated menace, stood across from me, his chest heaving like a bellows. His eyes, small and beady, were fixed on me with an intensity that could curdle milk. I’d managed to survive Round One, which felt like a minor miracle, and Round Two had been… well, it had been the ‘Artie Shuffle,’ a term I’d coined myself in a moment of pure, unadulterated panic. It mostly involved a lot of flailing and an uncanny ability to avoid being flattened by Boris’s haymakers, usually by virtue of tripping over my own feet.
"You're a cockroach, Pumble," Boris growled, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the concrete floor. "You scurry. You hide. But cockroaches get crushed."
I tried to muster a brave face, but I suspected it looked more like a constipated badger. "Just trying to pay the rent, Boris," I squeaked, my voice several octaves higher than I’d intended. "Nothing personal."
