Chapter 13
The Unspoken Vow
Ophelia, resigned to her fate, believes Ashvin will not come for her, convinced of his indifference. She braces herself for Prince Reed's cruelty, her spirit dimming. However, against all odds, a day later, Ashvin arrives. He doesn't hesitate, his actions speaking louder than any words. He offers himself in exchange for her freedom, a shocking act of self-sacrifice that shatters Ophelia's perception of his feelings.
The air in the makeshift prison cell was thick with the scent of damp earth and despair. Ophelia huddled in the corner, her thin gown offering little protection against the persistent chill that seeped from the stone walls. Rohesia, her loyal friend, lay beside her, her breathing shallow, a stark testament to the grim reality of their captivity. Days had bled into one another, marked only by the scarce rations and the chilling silence that punctuated the occasional rough movements of their guards. Ophelia’s heart, once a fragile vessel of hope, had long since surrendered to the crushing weight of resignation. She had known, in the deepest recesses of her soul, that Ashvin would not come. Why would he? He had made his indifference clear, a wall of ice between them that she had never managed to breach. His silence, his averted gaze, had spoken volumes, confirming her deepest fears: she was merely a pawn, a regrettable necessity in his grander schemes, and the thought of him sacrificing anything for her was a fantasy she could no longer afford.
“He won’t come, Rohesia,” Ophelia whispered, her voice a dry rasp. “He never cared. This is just… the end of the line.”
Rohesia stirred, her eyes fluttering open, clouded with pain. “Don’t say that, Ophelia. You don’t know his heart.”
