The air in the Vladmor forest was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a cloying perfume that did little to mask the sharp tang of fear that clung to Ashvin. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of undergrowth, sent a fresh jolt of adrenaline through him. Brad’s men were relentless, their pursuit a suffocating presence that pressed in on him from all sides. He fought with a ferocity born of desperation, his sword a blur of silver against the deepening gloom. His heel throbbed, a constant, agonizing reminder of the wound Brad had inflicted, but the pain was a distant echo compared to the cold dread that had settled in his gut. He parried a blow, the clang of steel ringing out like a death knell, and then, with a surge of desperate strength, he disarmed his attacker.

Just as he thought he might gain a moment’s respite, a breathless figure burst through the trees. Roderick, his face grim, his armor stained with mud and blood, scrambled towards him. “My Prince!” he gasped, his voice raw with exertion. “News… from the mainland.”

Ashvin’s hand tightened on his sword hilt, his gaze fixed on Roderick. “What is it?” he demanded, his voice dangerously low.
