Chapter 7
Shadows in the Leaves
Standing beneath the oak, a fleeting image flashes in Anya's mind – a child's laughter, a shared secret. The memory is fragile, like a butterfly's wing.
The old oak stood sentinel, its branches reaching wide like ancient, welcoming arms. Anya stood beneath it, the rough bark cool against her cheek. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a perfume of seasons past. It was here, the map had whispered, a place of significance. And as she breathed it in, something stirred within her, a phantom limb of memory tugging at the edges of her awareness.
A flash, so quick it might have been a trick of the light filtering through the dense canopy: a child’s bright laughter, a secret whispered in hushed tones, the feel of small hands clasped tight. It was like trying to catch sunlight on water, the image shimmering and dissolving before she could grasp its form. Fragile, yes, like a butterfly’s wing, delicate and easily crushed. Anya closed her eyes, willing it to linger, to solidify. But the leaves rustled above, a gentle sigh, and the moment was gone, leaving only a faint, sweet ache in its wake.
She traced the intricate lines of the map again, her finger hovering over a small, stylized drawing of this very oak. It was undeniably real, this place, this tree. But the memory it conjured was a ghost, a whisper from a life she couldn’t quite recall. The map had been her guide, a tangible thread leading her through the labyrinth of her forgotten years, but sometimes, like now, it felt as though the map itself was teasing her, showing her the doors but withholding the keys.
