The map, spread across Anya’s small kitchen table, felt more alive than anything else in her quiet life. Its lines, inked in a faded sepia, wove a narrative of a place she knew but couldn't recall. The first mark, a tiny, spidery ‘X’ beside a drawing of a grand, old oak, pulsed with a silent invitation. Mr. Petrov’s words echoed in her mind, a gentle hum beneath the rustle of the map’s brittle paper. “Some paths, Anya,” he’d said, his eyes twinkling with a wisdom that seemed as ancient as the cobblestones outside his shop, “are best walked one step at a time.”

The oak tree was exactly as depicted, a colossal sentinel with branches like weathered arms reaching towards the sky. Its trunk was a tapestry of deep furrows and mossy patches, a testament to countless seasons weathered. Anya circled it slowly, her heart thrumming a rhythm of anticipation and a faint, unsettling unease. The tree was undeniably grand, a landmark of impressive stature, but it offered no immediate spark of memory, no sudden jolt of recognition. It was simply a tree, old and imposing.
