Anya sat by her window, the worn map spread across her lap, its lines and symbols no longer just ink on parchment but the very threads of a life she couldn’t quite grasp. The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace, felt muted, as if the light itself was struggling to penetrate the fog within her. She traced a faded river with her finger, the same river that wound its way through the edge of town, its gentle murmur a constant, almost mournful, lullaby. It was then, as her gaze drifted from the map to the shimmering water outside, that the first tremor began.

It was subtle, like a butterfly’s wing brushing against her mind. A flash of brilliant scarlet, so vivid it seemed to burn behind her eyelids. A ball. A bright red ball, bouncing, then rolling away. Anya blinked, her heart giving a sudden, startled leap. Where had that come from? She shook her head, trying to dislodge the fleeting image, but it clung, a persistent ember. Then, another flicker. A sharp, stinging pain, a sensation of rough grit against tender skin. A scraped knee. A small, childish sob.

The room seemed to tilt. The familiar scent of dried lavender and old paper in her small cottage suddenly felt alien, suffocating. More images cascaded, tumbling over each other like pebbles in a swift stream. A small hand reaching out, then pulled away. A hurried whisper, indistinct but laced with urgency. A feeling of profound sadness, a hollow ache that resonated deep within her bones. It wasn't just seeing these images; it was *feeling* them. The sting of the scraped knee, the terror of being left behind, the overwhelming grief – they flooded her, raw and potent.
