The air in the royal archives was thick with the scent of aged parchment and forgotten secrets. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating towering shelves crammed with scrolls and ledgers that chronicled generations of royal lineage and financial dealings. Detective Alistair Fitch, a man whose sharp eyes missed nothing and whose mind was as precise as a well-honed blade, ran a gloved finger along a particularly grimy tome. He was a man of meticulous habits, and the pervasive disarray of this particular chamber grated on his sensibilities. His current assignment, a seemingly mundane audit of the kingdom’s treasury, had taken a decidedly peculiar turn. For weeks, he had been chasing shadows, following a trail of missing funds that dissolved into thin air, leaving behind only whispers and a gnawing sense of unease.

He adjusted his spectacles, the lenses catching the faint glow of his enchanted lantern. The Royal Family’s finances were not simply a matter of coin and coin alone; they were intrinsically linked to the kingdom’s very stability, a fact that made their inexplicable depletion all the more alarming. Lady Lilly, the current regent, had been… unhelpful. Her explanations were as evasive as a mist on a moonless night, her pronouncements laced with a subtle, chilling impatience that hinted at a deeper, more guarded agenda. Fitch had learned long ago to trust his instincts, and his instincts screamed that Lady Lilly was not being entirely forthright.

He sighed, a puff of air disturbing the stillness. “Where have you gone, you elusive ducats?” he muttered to himself, his voice a low rumble in the cavernous room. He was accustomed to the vagaries of human nature, the greed, the deception, the sheer, baffling stupidity that often accompanied matters of wealth. But this was different. This felt… orchestrated. A carefully constructed illusion designed to conceal something far more significant than mere embezzlement.
