Magnolia, her fairy guardian, a creature of moonlight and ancient moss, perched on a low-hanging branch, her silver eyes fixed on Rose. There was a weariness in her gaze, a sorrow that mirrored the growing ache in Rose’s own heart. They had spent days in this secluded part of the fairy realm, poring over forgotten scrolls and listening to the whispers of the wind, piecing together fragments of a life Rose had never known.

“She loved you, child,” Magnolia’s voice, like the chime of distant bells, was soft. “More than life itself. That is why she made the choice.”
