Chapter 4
Realm of Shadows
Rose arrives in her mother's kingdom, only to find it shrouded in fear and despair. The oppressive rule of her aunt, Lady Lilly, has plunged the land into turmoil, a stark contrast to the peace of the fairy realm.
The air in the human kingdom was a heavy cloak, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something acrid and unsettling. Rose, accustomed to the sweet, floral perfume of the fairy realm, found it suffocating. The vibrant greens and blues of her childhood were replaced by a muted palette of grays and browns, a landscape leached of its joy. As Magnolia, her fairy guardian, had deposited her at the edge of a gnarled forest, a shiver, not entirely of the cool air, traced its way down her spine. This was it, then. The world her dreams had hinted at, the world her mother had belonged to.
Magnolia, her ethereal form shimmering faintly in the dim light, offered a rare, small smile. “Remember, child, what I have told you. Your mother’s love is a shield, and your own spirit, a flame. Do not let the shadows extinguish it.” Her voice, usually a melodic whisper, held a note of urgency.
Rose clutched the locket, its cool metal a comforting weight against her palm. It was the only tangible link to the mother she’d never known, a woman spoken of in hushed tones by the fairies, a queen whose legacy was now a ghost. “I will be brave, Magnolia,” Rose promised, her voice steadier than she felt. “And I will find out what happened.”
