The air crackled, a palpable tension that vibrated not just through the stone of the throne room, but through the very marrow of Rose’s bones. Before her, bathed in the sickly, jaundiced light of the hastily lit torches, stood Lady Lilly. Her aunt’s face, usually a mask of haughty disdain, was contorted with a fury that was almost primal. It was a face Rose was beginning to recognize, the face of a cornered beast, desperate and dangerous.

“You,” Lilly spat, her voice a venomous hiss that scraped against Rose’s nerves. “You dare to stand before me? After everything I’ve done to secure this kingdom, to ensure its prosperity!”

Rose’s gaze, steady and unwavering, met her aunt’s. The locket, warm against her skin, felt like a tangible anchor to her mother’s memory, to the truth that Lilly so desperately tried to bury. “Prosperity?” Rose’s voice, though it trembled slightly with the weight of the moment, carried a newfound strength. “You call this oppression prosperity? You call fear and starvation prosperity?”
