Chapter 16
The Weight of the Crown
Rose grapples with the immense responsibility of her destiny. The weight of the unclaimed crown and the lives of her people press upon her, forcing her to confront her fears and embrace her role.
The moss-covered stones of the fairy glade had always felt like home, a soft, yielding embrace that cradled Rose’s every step. But lately, the earth beneath her feet seemed to tremble with an unspoken urgency. Her dreams, once filled with the dappled sunlight and the laughter of sprites, had taken a darker turn. Visions of a weeping woman, her face obscured by shadow, and the unsettling glint of a crown, too heavy to bear, haunted her sleep. She awoke with a gasp, the phantom weight of that regal burden settling upon her own slender shoulders.
Magnolia, her ancient fairy guardian, watched her with eyes that held the wisdom of centuries, a quiet concern etched into her time-worn features. “The human world stirs within you, little one,” she’d murmured, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. “It is a song you cannot ignore forever.”
Rose clutched the locket, its cool metal a familiar comfort against her skin. The intricate crest, a silver falcon with wings outstretched, was the only tangible link to the mother she’d never known. Lady Eleanor. The name itself felt like a half-forgotten melody, sweet and sorrowful. The locket had been a gift from Daisy and Peach, her other protectors, who spoke in hushed, reverent tones of Eleanor’s grace and courage. They hinted at a life of royalty, of a kingdom lost, but their words were always veiled, like sunlight struggling through a dense canopy.
