Rose, her heart a frantic hummingbird against her ribs, stumbled through the ancient trees, the weight of Magnolia’s words a heavy cloak upon her shoulders. *“They are coming, child. Lilly’s hounds are sniffing at the edges of our sanctuary.”* The cryptic warning, delivered with an urgency that had stripped away the old fairy’s usual placid demeanor, now echoed in the sudden stillness that had fallen over the forest. The birds had ceased their songs, the rustle of leaves seemed to hold its breath.
She clutched the locket, its cool metal a familiar comfort against her skin. Eleanor’s crest, a stylized silver stag, felt like a shield. Daisy and Peach, their faces etched with a worry that mirrored her own, flanked her, their movements swift and silent as they navigated the winding paths. Daisy’s hand, usually so steady, trembled slightly as she adjusted the quiver of arrows on her back. Peach, ever the pragmatist, scanned the undergrowth with sharp, intelligent eyes.
"Are you certain, Magnolia?" Peach’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the oppressive silence. "We haven't seen any sign of them this deep."
