Rose, her heart a hummingbird’s flutter against her ribs, traced the intricate carvings on the stone table. Beside her, Detective Alistair Fitch, his usual wry amusement replaced by a focused intensity, examined a faded tapestry depicting a triumphant king, a stark contrast to the kingdom’s current grim reality. They had followed the breadcrumbs, the subtle hints left by a desperate Eleanor, and found themselves in a place meant to be lost to time, a vault of sorts, hidden beneath the very foundations of the royal palace.

“This… this is where it should be,” Fitch murmured, his voice hushed, almost reverent. He gestured to a circular indentation in the table, perfectly shaped to hold something significant. “The treasury. Or what’s left of it, at least. Eleanor wouldn’t have simply let it vanish. It was her legacy, her responsibility.”

Rose nodded, her gaze sweeping over the room. Empty chests lay scattered like fallen soldiers, their lids askew, their interiors plundered. It was a scene of utter devastation, a silent testament to years of neglect and, she suspected, deliberate theft. “But… who would have taken it? And why leave it so bare?”
