They loomed like sleeping giants, their snow-capped heads kissing the bruised, twilight sky. Beneath her worn boots, the ground was a tapestry of loose scree and hardy, wind-battered shrubs, each step a calculated risk. Beside her, Liam moved with a different kind of rhythm, his movements economical, his gaze fixed on the path, or rather, the *lack* of one. He was a study in groundedness, a sturdy oak against her wild, untamed vine.

“Are you sure about this, Elara?” Liam’s voice, usually a calm bass, was laced with a familiar concern. He gestured with his chin towards a narrow, almost invisible ledge that snaked its way up the mountainside. “That looks less like a path and more like a dare from gravity itself.”

Elara’s breath hitched, not from exertion, but from the sheer, exhilarating terror of it all. The map, clutched tightly in her gloved hand, showed a dotted line, a whisper of a route, disappearing into this formidable ascent. “It’s the only way, Liam. Aunt Isolde marked it. It’s a shortcut, she called it.” She offered him a grin that felt a little too bright, a little too forced. The truth was, the ‘shortcut’ looked more like a direct route to a very uncomfortable tumble.
