The air in our home felt different. It wasn't a sudden, dramatic shift, but a gentle unfolding, like the slow unfurling of a fern frond in early spring. For so long, I’d been so focused on the weeds, on meticulously identifying and pulling each tiny, unwelcome sprout that dared to push its way through the soil of our shared life. I’d been so consumed by the absence of discord, by the constant vigilance required to keep it at bay, that I hadn’t truly noticed the presence of something else entirely. I found one of us, not long after we were married, laughing on a beach. We looked so carefree, so utterly in love. A pang of something akin to sadness, but also immense gratitude, washed over me. I held the photo out to him.
