The polished studio floor, usually a comforting expanse, felt like a treacherous ice rink beneath my worn-out ballet slippers. Each turn, each leap, each pointed toe was a testament to hours upon hours of sweat and tears. The elite dance team tryouts loomed, a monstrous shadow cast over my every waking moment. Kelly, my rock, my confidante, and now my relentless coach, stood by the mirrored wall, a clipboard in her hand, her gaze sharp, dissecting my every move. She was a former queen of this very team, and her every instruction was laced with the wisdom of someone who had navigated these shark-infested waters before.
“Emma, your extension! It’s sloppy,” Kelly’s voice, usually a warm melody, was now a sharp staccato. “You’re letting your heel drop before you’ve fully committed. Think about the line. Imagine you’re pulling a thread from your heel all the way through your fingertips.”
I gritted my teeth, trying to channel her words, to visualize the impossible stretch. But the image in my mind was a tangled mess of clumsy limbs and missed beats. Around me, other girls moved with a fluidity that seemed almost supernatural. Sarah, with her impossibly high leaps and perfect pirouettes, was the embodiment of everything I aspired to be, and everything I feared I was not. Her every movement was a quiet assertion of dominance, a silent reminder of the impossibly high bar set for this team.
