The polished wooden floor of the studio felt slick beneath my worn ballet slippers, a familiar comfort that was starting to feel like a betrayal. Every pirouette, every leap, every extension was under Kelly’s watchful, impossibly critical gaze. She stood by the mirror, arms crossed, her expression a mask of intense concentration that did nothing to soothe the knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. We were on the cusp of the final week before tryouts, and this was supposed to be *the* run-through, the one where everything clicked, where the muscle memory took over and the dance flowed from my soul.

“Again, Emma,” Kelly’s voice, sharp and clear, cut through the air like a perfectly executed fouetté. “From the transition into the jazz section. You’re rushing it. You’re letting the anticipation of the next move dictate your current one.”

I nodded, my breath catching in my throat. Rushing. That was my curse. My ambition, the very thing that had propelled me to this point, also had a nasty habit of making me sprint through moments I should be savoring, inhabiting. I reset my position, trying to find that inner stillness Kelly preached, that place of calm where the dance could simply *be*.
