Chapter 13
Dancing for Herself
Emma pours her heart into every movement, dancing not for a spot on the team, but for the sheer love of it. She embraces the vulnerability and strength discovered through the challenging journey.
The air in the studio was thick, not just with the scent of sweat and hairspray, but with a palpable tension that hummed beneath the surface of our practiced smiles. Today was the day. The final day of tryouts. My stomach churned with a familiar mix of exhilaration and dread, a feeling that had become my constant companion for weeks. Kelly stood by the mirror, her arms crossed, her gaze sharp and unwavering as she watched the other dancers. I could feel her energy, a silent force propelling me forward, even as my own legs felt like lead.
The previous days had been a blur of pirouettes and pliés, of critiques and corrections, of moments where I felt I was soaring and moments where I plummeted into the depths of self-doubt. The argument with Kelly after I’d mangled the showcase routine still echoed in the quiet corners of my mind. Her words, sharp and laced with disappointment, had hit me harder than any missed step. *“How can you expect to make the team if you can’t even nail the basics, Emma? It’s not enough to just want it, you have to *earn* it!”* I’d retreated, wounded, the sting of failure a bitter taste in my mouth. For a night, I’d seriously considered walking away, the thought of disappointing Kelly, of proving her right about my perceived lack of dedication, a heavy weight on my chest. But then, I’d seen it in her eyes the next morning – not anger, but a fierce, unwavering belief that had chipped away at my resolve to quit. *“You’re not done yet, Em,”* she’d said, her voice softer than usual, but no less determined. *“This is what you want. Don’t let a bad day steal your dream.”*
Now, standing here, the music began, a melodic swell that always managed to ignite something primal within me. It was the same piece we’d used for the showcase, the one that had become the symbol of my biggest failure. But today, something was different. The fear was still there, a tiny tremor at the edge of my awareness, but it was overshadowed by a newfound sense of peace. The pressure to impress, to win a coveted spot, had somehow dissolved. I wasn’t dancing for Kelly anymore, or for the judges, or even for myself in the desperate way I had before. I was dancing because I loved it.
