The air in the auditorium was thick with a nervous energy that hummed like a trapped bee. It clung to the velvet seats, seeped into the worn floorboards, and coated my tongue with the metallic taste of anxiety. This was it. The culmination of weeks of sweat, tears, and Kelly’s relentless tutelage. The elite dance team tryouts. My lifelong dream, a shimmering, unattainable star, felt both achingly close and impossibly far.

Kelly stood just offstage, a fierce, protective shadow, her eyes, usually so warm and encouraging, now sharp with an almost unnerving intensity. She’d pushed me harder than I thought possible, each correction a jolt, each critique a sting. “Don’t just dance, Emma,” she’d barked yesterday, her voice a whip crack in the empty studio. “*Feel* it. Live it. If you don’t bleed for this, they won’t even see you.” Bleed. I’d felt like I was already drowning in it.

My palms were slick, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I watched as the previous dancer, a girl with a cascade of fiery red hair and a smile that seemed to scorch the stage, took her final, triumphant bow. The applause was thunderous, a wave of sound that washed over me, making my knees tremble. She looked so… effortless. Like she’d been born on that stage, bathed in spotlights. A familiar knot of inadequacy tightened in my stomach. Was I just fooling myself? Was this ambition a cruel joke played by my own overconfident heart?
