The Night Before

The eve of the tryouts is filled with nervous energy. Emma reviews her steps, her mind a whirlwind of anticipation and residual fear, but a newfound sense of calm begins to settle.

The air in my room hung thick and heavy, charged with the unspoken anticipation of the day to come. Outside, the city hummed its usual nocturne, a distant lullaby that did little to soothe the frantic flutter in my chest. Tomorrow. Tomorrow was the day. The culmination of weeks of sweat, of aching muscles, of Kelly’s relentless drills and my own gnawing anxieties. I traced the familiar lines of my dance shoes, the worn leather a testament to countless hours spent perfecting every plié, every pirouette, every sharp, decisive movement.

My mind, however, was a battlefield. It replayed fragments of routines, each movement a potential pitfall, each step a reminder of past stumbles. I saw Kelly’s face, her brow furrowed in concentration as she corrected my form, her voice a steady current of encouragement, sometimes tinged with a frustration that mirrored my own. I saw the effortless grace of the rival dancer, a blur of perfect lines and unwavering confidence, a stark contrast to the shaky uncertainty that threatened to consume me.

I stood in the center of my room, the moonlight casting long, distorted shadows that danced with my own tentative movements. I ran through the choreography for the solo piece, the one that felt like the Everest of this entire endeavor. My body remembered, muscle memory a fickle friend, but my mind kept snagging, replaying the moment I’d faltered in practice, the harsh words that had followed, the sting of disappointment that had felt so sharp.
