The dust swirled around Eleanor’s worn boots, a gritty punctuation mark to the endless, monotonous highway. It had been days since she’d left the manicured lawns and suffocating silences of home, days filled with the rumble of bus engines and the fleeting faces of strangers. This town, a collection of sun-bleached buildings clinging to the side of a forgotten road, felt like another pause in a journey she wasn’t entirely sure how to navigate. She’d sought refuge in a small diner, the kind where the coffee was strong enough to strip paint and the waitress knew everyone’s name, even if she’d only just met them.

Eleanor looked up, expecting the waitress, but found herself meeting the gaze of a man whose eyes held the depth of ancient forests. He was older, his face etched with lines that spoke of laughter and contemplation, and he carried an aura of quiet wisdom that seemed to emanate from him like a gentle warmth. He gestured to the empty chair opposite her.
