The dust swirled around Eleanor’s worn boots, a gritty testament to the miles she’d already clocked. Each step away from the manicured lawns and suffocating silence of her childhood home felt like a breath of fresh air, sharp and invigorating, even if it stung her lungs a little. She’d packed light, a backpack stuffed with essentials and a heart brimming with a nervous, exhilarating hope. The familiar hum of the city faded behind her, replaced by the rustle of leaves and the distant call of birds, a symphony of the untamed.

Her first real stop was a roadside diner, a beacon of neon against the darkening sky. The air inside was thick with the aroma of frying bacon and stale coffee, a comforting, unpretentious scent. A woman with a beehive hairdo and a smile as wide as the counter greeted her, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Just passing through, hon?” she asked, her voice a warm Southern drawl.

Eleanor nodded, a shy smile playing on her lips. “Something like that.”
