The air in Marcus Thorne’s small, book-lined study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something vaguely herbal, a comforting aroma that always settled Eleanor’s frayed nerves. Sunlight slanted through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet space. She’d sought him out, drawn by an unspoken need for an anchor in the tumultuous sea of her newfound reality. The family secret, the shattering discovery of her father’s exploitation, her mother’s complicity – it had all left her feeling adrift, a ship without a rudder.

“It’s a heavy burden, isn’t it?” Marcus’s voice was a low rumble, a perfect counterpoint to the silence. He sat opposite her, his gaze steady, kind. He hadn’t pressed her for details, simply listened with an attentiveness that felt like a balm.

Eleanor nodded, her throat tight. “I feel… untethered. As if the ground I thought I stood on has dissolved beneath me.” She traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool against her fingertips. “All these years, my father, this legendary figure… and he built his empire on… on me. On my name.” The words tasted like ash.
