The silence in the forest felt heavier than usual. It wasn’t the peaceful, sleepy quiet that settled after a gentle rain, but a strained, brittle hush, as if all the leaves were holding their breath. Bones, usually so full of bubbling stories and cheerful observations, felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He’d tried to tell himself it was just a silly argument, a little bump in the road of their friendship. But the ache that lingered, the hollow space where KaliJah’s bright laughter used to be, told him it was more than that. It was a chasm, and he was standing on the edge, looking down at the broken pieces of their connection.
He wandered towards the Whispering Willow, the old tree that always seemed to understand without needing a single word. Its branches, usually draped with a soft, mossy green, seemed to droop a little lower today, mirroring the sadness in his own heart. He sat at its base, tracing the rough bark with his fingers. He remembered the day KaliJah had first told him about her name, how it came from a song about a wooden Indian, steadfast and true. He’d thought then how much like her it was, strong and enduring. And he, Bones, with his love for stories, his deep roots in the earth like his Taurus nature, felt like her perfect match. They were two halves, woven together by a magic far older than they were.
