He saw it in the strained lines of his father’s face, the furtive glances exchanged between the elders, and most acutely, in Elara’s own haunted eyes. She, who had always been on the fringes, an anomaly in their wolf-centric world, seemed to absorb the pack’s suffering like a sponge.
He’d found her that morning, by the old oak at the edge of the whispering woods, her fingers tracing patterns in the dew-kissed moss. The air around her shimmered with a strange, almost imperceptible energy. It wasn’t the raw, untamed power of a wolf, but something far subtler, something that hummed with the quiet pulse of the night. He’d approached cautiously, a knot of apprehension tightening in his chest.
"Elara," he’d called softly, his voice barely disturbing the stillness.
