Around her, the pack was a huddled mass of fear and desperation, their usual boisterous energy leashed by the creeping sickness that had gripped them for moons. But tonight, their fear was a tangible thing, a heavy cloak woven from the whispers of the corrupted spirit that had festered within their lands.

Her own magic, a nascent, untamed thing that had once felt like a burden, now thrummed through her veins, a cool, silvery current against the feverish heat of the night. It was the moon’s magic, Elder Maeve had said, a conduit to a power far older and purer than the wolf’s fierce territoriality. Elara felt it coalesce within her, a sphere of soft, incandescent light that pulsed in time with her own racing heart. This was the battle. Not of fang and claw, but of light against shadow, of life against a consuming decay.

“Are you ready, Elara?” Maeve’s voice, usually a gentle murmur, was laced with an urgent steel. The elder stood beside her, her weathered face illuminated by the same spectral moonlight, her eyes fixed on the swirling miasma that coalesced at the center of the clearing. It was there, in that vortex of corrupted energy, that the spirit of the sickness resided, a parasitic entity that fed on the pack’s vitality.
