Chapter 12
The Ritual's Call
Elder Maeve guides Elara towards a sacred moonlit clearing. The pack gathers, a mix of hope and apprehension on their faces as Elara prepares for an unknown trial.
The air vibrated with a tension that had become a constant companion to the pack. It clung to the pines, seeped into the very earth beneath their paws, and coiled in the pit of every stomach. Tonight, the moon, a bruised and angry orb, hung low in the ink-black sky, its light a sickly crimson that painted the familiar forest in hues of dread. This was no ordinary night. This was the night of the blood moon, a celestial event whispered about in hushed tones, a harbinger of change, and tonight, a beacon of desperate hope.
Elder Maeve’s gnarled hand, surprisingly strong, gripped Elara’s arm. Her touch was a cool, steady presence against Elara’s own trembling skin. “Come, child,” she rasped, her voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “The clearing awaits.”
Elara’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Around them, the pack had gathered, a silent, formidable assembly. Their usual boisterous camaraderie was muted, replaced by a palpable anxiety. Faces, usually etched with wolfish confidence, were drawn and shadowed, their eyes fixed on Elara, a mixture of fear, doubt, and a sliver of desperate expectation warring within them. She felt their gazes like a physical weight, a thousand judgments pressing down. For so long, she had been the anomaly, the one who couldn’t run with the speed of the wind, howl with the clarity of the pack, or feel the earth thrum beneath her paws with the instinct of her kin. Now, she was their potential salvation. The irony was a bitter taste on her tongue.
