Chayton, known to his people as Swift Arrow, felt that weight settle upon his shoulders like the heavy winter snows that would soon blanket the land. The elders had spoken, their faces etched with the same worry that gnawed at his own gut. Scarcity was a cruel mistress, and this year, she had tightened her grip with a vengeance. The herds were thin, the winter stores meager, and the faces of his people, particularly the children, held a hollowness that chilled him more than any frost.

He sat by the dying embers of the fire, the flames casting dancing shadows that mimicked the turmoil within him. Beside him, his mother, a woman whose hands had known both the softness of weaving and the harshness of survival, stirred a pot of thin broth. The meager meal was a stark reminder of their plight.

“The council is restless, Chayton,” she said, her voice a low murmur, devoid of complaint but heavy with unspoken concern.
