A United Front

The air in Kenji’s study, usually a sanctuary of quiet contemplation, felt thick with an unspoken tension. Outside, the meticulously manicured garden basked in the soft glow of the late afternoon sun, but within these walls, a storm was brewing. Mr. Tanaka’s words, delivered with an unnerving calm that belied their venom, still echoed in my mind. He had twisted truths, painted Kenji in a light that was both alien and unsettling, and, worst of all, had managed to stir the old, familiar anxieties within me.

Kenji sat opposite me, his gaze steady and unwavering, yet I could sense the turmoil beneath his composed exterior. He had listened intently, his jaw tight, his hands clasped in his lap. When Tanaka had finally departed, leaving a chill in his wake, a heavy silence had descended. I had expected an outburst, a torrent of anger, but Kenji remained strangely still.
