The soft glow of the afternoon sun, filtered through the shoji screens of my small Kyoto apartment, usually brought me a sense of quiet contentment. Today, however, it felt more like a spotlight, illuminating every anxious thought that had been swirling in my mind since Mr. Tanaka’s veiled threats had begun to echo in my ears. I traced the delicate brushstrokes of a half-finished ink painting, the bamboo stalks I was rendering seeming to bend under an invisible wind, mirroring the turmoil within me.

A gentle knock at the door startled me. It was Riana, her usual bright smile a little softer today, her eyes holding a familiar warmth that always managed to soothe my frayed nerves. She carried a small bento box, its lacquered surface gleaming, a silent offering of comfort.

“Olivia,” she said, stepping inside and placing the box on the low table. “You’ve been quiet. And your art… it’s beautiful, of course, but there’s a tension in the lines I haven’t seen before.”
