The delicate scent of cherry blossoms, once a comforting balm, now seemed to mock me. Each soft petal that drifted down, a whisper of fleeting beauty, felt like a tiny shard of doubt piercing my heart. It had been Riana, with her usual gentle prodding, who’d brought it up. “Olivia,” she’d said, her voice a low murmur over steaming cups of matcha, “I saw Mr. Tanaka at the gallery opening yesterday. He seemed… rather interested in your work.” My work. My art. The only thing I felt truly owned, truly mine. It was a fragile shield, and the mention of his name, that slick, oily man who had insinuated himself into Kenji’s periphery, sent a shiver down my spine.

Kenji had been so dismissive of Tanaka. “A minor business acquaintance, my dear,” he’d assured me, his hand warm on my cheek. “He has an eye for… opportunity.” But Tanaka’s eyes, when they had landed on me at that first, awkward introduction, had held a predatory glint that had nothing to do with art and everything to do with possession. He’d complimented my brushstrokes, my use of color, but his gaze had lingered, assessing, dissecting. It was the same way my ex-husband had looked at me, not as a person, but as a beautiful, expensive acquisition.

And now, Tanaka was showing interest in my art. The thought was a cold, creeping vine, wrapping itself around my chest. What could he want with my paintings? Unless… unless it wasn’t about the art at all. Unless it was about Kenji.
