Leo stood at the edge of the living room, his gaze fixed on the window. The setting sun bled across the sky in hues of bruised purple and fiery orange, painting the familiar world outside with an unsettling urgency. Inside, the air crackled with a tension that had settled over their house like a thick, unwelcome fog. Melissa, usually a bright spark of quiet joy, was huddled in her favorite spot by the fireplace, her small, dark form almost indistinguishable from the shadows themselves. Even her fur seemed to absorb the dimming light, making her appear even more fragile.

He glanced back at his siblings. Maya was tracing patterns on the dusty coffee table with a pensive finger, her brow furrowed. Sam was bouncing a worn tennis ball against the wall with a forced rhythm, the thuds echoing the anxiety thrumming in Leo’s chest. Chloe was poring over a thick book, her lips moving silently as she scanned the pages, a futile attempt to find a logical answer to the illogical fear that had gripped them. Noah sat cross-legged on the rug, his eyes wide and unblinking, fixed on Melissa, as if his silent gaze could somehow shield her.

It had been a week since the shadowy figure had first appeared, a fleeting, menacing presence at the edge of their vision. A week since the laughter had begun to thin, replaced by hushed whispers and quick, nervous glances. The gifts Melissa brought, once symbols of pure delight, now felt like precious treasures they had to guard with their lives.
