It wasn't the chill of an open window; this was a creeping, unnatural frost that seemed to seep from the very walls. The children, in the midst of a boisterous game of 'Melissa Says,' froze. Leo, mid-command to hop on one foot, felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine. Maya, her hand outstretched to offer Melissa a clover she’d found, saw the little creature tremble. Sam, about to launch into a triumphant roar, felt his voice catch in his throat. Chloe, busy sketching a new design for Melissa’s tiny, woven bed, looked up, her brow furrowed in concentration that quickly turned to alarm. Noah, who had been quietly humming a soft tune to Melissa nestled on his lap, felt her small body stiffen against him.

Then, the closet door, the very one where Leo had first found Melissa, creaked open. It didn’t swing wide; it inched, slowly, deliberately, as if pushed by an unseen, hesitant hand. A sliver of darkness, deeper than any shadow, spilled into the room. It wasn't just the absence of light; it felt like a hungry void, a palpable presence that sucked the warmth from their laughter.

“Who’s there?” Leo’s voice, usually so steady, wavered slightly. He stepped forward, his protective instinct kicking in, placing himself between the opening closet and Melissa.
