Chloe’s brow furrowed, a familiar crease appearing between her eyebrows as she chewed on the end of a pencil. The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to cast long, ominous shadows across the living room floor, mirroring the unease that had settled over their little group. Outside, the wind rustled the leaves with a sound that felt less like a song and more like a whisper of warning. Leo paced restlessly, his protective instincts buzzing like an agitated bee. Maya sat quietly, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns on a sketchbook, her eyes distant, lost in thought. Sam, usually a whirlwind of activity, was unusually subdued, his gaze fixed on Melissa, who was nestled in Noah’s lap, a small, dark lump of quiet reassurance. Noah, in turn, was stroking her velvety fur with a tenderness that spoke volumes.

“We can’t just wait for it to try again,” Chloe declared, her voice cutting through the heavy silence. She tapped the pencil against a clean sheet of paper, her mind already assembling pieces of a puzzle. “We need a plan. A real plan, not just… hoping for the best.”

Leo stopped pacing and looked at her, his eyes sharp with a leader’s urgency. “What kind of plan, Chloe? It was… it was like nothing I’ve ever seen. Fast, and strong, and it just wanted to grab her.”
