Maya’s heart ached with a familiar, soft thrum whenever Melissa seemed troubled. It wasn’t a loud, clanging alarm, but a persistent, low hum that only she seemed to hear. Today, the hum was louder than usual, a discordant note in the otherwise cheerful symphony of their lives with Melissa. The little creature, usually a vibrant spark of shadow and delight, was curled into a tighter ball than ever before, her tiny ebony form almost swallowed by the plush velvet of the armchair. Her usual bright, curious eyes were clouded with a fear that sent a shiver down Maya’s spine.

“It’s okay, Melissa,” Maya whispered, her voice as gentle as falling snow. She settled onto the rug beside the armchair, not touching, just being present. “Whatever it is, we’re here. Leo’s here, Sam’s here, Chloe, Noah, everyone.” She stroked the soft fabric of her own worn jeans, as if the comfort could somehow transfer. “You’re not alone. Remember?”

Melissa stirred, a faint tremor running through her. She didn’t speak, not in the way humans did, but Maya had learned to read her subtle shifts, the almost imperceptible flick of her nonexistent ears, the way her tiny, almost invisible tail twitched. Today, those twitches were agitated, a frantic Morse code of distress.
