A Clue in the Attic
Back near the house, they find a loose floorboard in the attic. Inside, they discover a box filled with Lily's old drawings, including one special one.
Our paws padded softly on the rough attic floorboards, each creak a tiny gasp in the dusty silence. The air up here was thick with the scent of forgotten things – old paper, dried flowers, and the faint, sweet smell of Lily’s childhood. It felt like stepping into a memory, a place where time had stopped just for us. My button eye scanned the shadowy corners, a flicker of hope warring with the gnawing anxiety that had settled in my stuffing since Lily left.
"Are you sure about this, Barnaby?" Slinky whispered, her tail giving a nervous twitch. She was perched on a stack of old hatboxes, her bright button eyes wide and alert. "This attic feels… spooky."
I nodded, trying to project a bravery I didn't entirely feel. "Lily's room was always so neat, Slinky. If those drawings are anywhere, they’d be somewhere she kept her most special things. And her grandpa’s old things were always stored up here." My voice was a low rumble, a sound that always seemed to steady Slinky. "We just have to be thorough."
