The Great Escape

The toys sneak out of the house. They face the daunting task of navigating the unfamiliar world outside, a world much bigger than Lily's room.

The floorboards creaked a mournful tune beneath my paws as we tiptoed across the landing. Each step was a drumbeat of fear and determination. Outside, the moon hung like a pale, watchful eye in the inky sky, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to swallow up the familiar corners of Lily’s house. It was a house that now felt as silent and empty as a forgotten attic, a house we had to leave behind for a little while. My button eye, usually so full of cheerful stuffing, felt a little loose with worry.

“Are you sure about this, Barnaby?” Slinky whispered, her bushy tail a question mark behind her. She was perched on my shoulder, her tiny paws clinging to my fur. Even with her usual spark, I could hear the tremor in her voice. The world beyond Lily’s bedroom window was a vast, unknown territory, and the thought of it made my own stuffing feel a bit wobbly.

“We have to be sure, Slinky,” I rumbled back, my voice a low, comforting growl. “Lily needs us. And we can’t help her if we stay here, hiding in the dark.” I nudged the bedroom door open a crack with my nose. The hallway stretched out before us, a dark chasm filled with the hushed breathing of the sleeping house. The stairs, usually a fun slide down, now looked like a treacherous mountain range.
