Chapter 18
A Secret Celebration
Once Lily is asleep, the toys gather for a quiet celebration. They share tales of their bravery and the day they saved Lily's home.
The moon, a sliver of pearl in the inky sky, cast long, dancing shadows across Lily’s bedroom floor. Outside, the world was hushed, a gentle lullaby of crickets and rustling leaves. Inside, however, a different kind of quiet had settled – a watchful, triumphant quiet. Lily was finally asleep, her breathing soft and even, a testament to the day’s tumultuous events. Slinky the Squirrel, her tail a question mark of excitement, perched on his shoulder. Professor Hoot, his spectacles glinting, surveyed the scene from his perch on the bookshelf, while a motley crew of other toys – the brave plastic knight, the floppy-eared dog, the graceful ballerina – were arranged in a semicircle, their painted smiles wide and genuine.
“We did it,” Barnaby rumbled, his voice a low, contented murmur. “We really did it.”
