Lily's Return

Lily is told she can stay. Happy tears stream down her face. The toys feel a surge of relief and pride, their mission accomplished.

Lily’s small hands trembled as she clutched her mother’s fingers, her eyes wide and uncertain. The air in the living room, usually so filled with the echoes of her laughter and the clatter of her toys, felt thick with a hushed tension. She had been told that something important was going to happen, something that would decide if she could stay in her home, her beloved home, or if she would have to leave. The thought of leaving made her tummy do flip-flops, the kind that weren’t fun like on the swings.

Then, she saw them. Her parents, sitting on the sofa, looking serious. And beside them, on the coffee table, were her drawings. Not just any drawings, but the drawings. The ones she’d poured her heart into, the ones that showed her dreams and her secrets, the ones that held the magic of her world. And there, nestled amongst the colourful pages, was a small, tattered teddy bear. Barnaby. Her Barnaby.

Her mother’s voice, soft and a little shaky, broke the silence. “Lily, honey,” she began, her gaze meeting Lily’s with a tenderness that made Lily’s heart flutter. “We… we made a mistake. A big one.”
