The air in Lily’s study crackled with a tension so thick, it felt like static electricity. Barnaby Bear, tucked with the others in the now-familiar cardboard box, could practically taste the fear. He’d seen Lily’s parents before, of course, but never like this. Her mother, Mrs. Gable, her face pale and drawn, clutched a manila folder as if it were a lifeline. Mr. Gable, usually so boisterous, stood beside her, his shoulders slumped, a profound sadness etched into his features.

“I… I don’t understand,” Mrs. Gable whispered, her voice trembling as she fumbled with the clasp of the folder. Barnaby’s button eye felt like it was about to pop out from the sheer force of his own anxiety. He’d watched Lily’s dad, Mr. Gable, find the folder just minutes ago, tucked away beneath a loose floorboard in the attic. It was the very folder Slinky had risked life and limb to retrieve, the one filled with Lily’s fantastical drawings, the ones that held the key to everything.

Slowly, deliberately, Mrs. Gable opened the folder. A soft gasp escaped her lips. Barnaby strained to see from his vantage point, his stuffing practically vibrating. Inside, spread across the worn cardboard, were Lily’s drawings. Not just scribbles, but vibrant, imaginative worlds bursting with color and life.
