The Presentation
Barnaby, with the help of Slinky, leaves the folder where Lily's parents will surely find it. They watch anxiously from a distance.
My stuffing felt like it was being squeezed by a giant, invisible hand. The folder, heavy with Lily’s dreams and our hopes, sat on the polished mahogany table. It was a safe place, Barnaby had declared, a place where Mr. and Mrs. Peterson would surely see it. Slinky, her tail a blur of nervous energy, perched on the edge of a velvet armchair, her plastic eyes wide. I was tucked beneath the edge of the same chair, my button eye fixed on the folder. Every creak of the house, every distant hum of the refrigerator, sounded like a thunderclap in the suffocating silence.
“Are you sure about this, Barnaby?” Slinky whispered, her voice barely audible above the frantic thumping of my own fabric heart. “What if they don’t look? What if they just… put it away somewhere else?”
I wriggled deeper into the shadows, my stitched smile feeling tight and unnatural. “It has to be here, Slinky. It’s the most obvious place. Right in the middle of everything. They can’t miss it.” My voice, though brave, trembled a little. I was the leader, the one who had promised Lily we’d fix this, but the weight of responsibility felt heavier than a thousand marbles. My worn fur prickled with anxiety.
