The air in Lily's attic was thick with dust motes dancing in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom. Barnaby Bear, his button eye a little loose from our hurried journey, clutched the crumpled drawings tighter. Slinky the Squirrel, her tail a nervous blur, perched on my shoulder, her tiny paws tapping a rhythm of anticipation. We’d navigated the treacherous climb, dodging cobwebs that clung like ghostly scarves, all for this. Professor Hoot.

He sat on a high shelf, a magnificent old owl toy, his felt feathers a little faded, his spectacles perched precariously on his beak. He was Lily’s grandfather’s toy, a relic of stories whispered and dreams spun. Professor Hoot was known throughout the toy community of Brightville for his wisdom, for his ability to see what others missed. If anyone could help us understand these smudged, chaotic sketches, it was him.

“Professor Hoot, sir?” I ventured, my voice a little squeaky, despite my best efforts.
