Grace stood at the large bay window, the late afternoon sun painting streaks of amber and rose across the ornate, dust-kissed glass. Outside, the ancient oaks of the Brian House grounds rustled their leaves, a sound that usually soothed her, but today, it felt like a frantic whisper. What if they think I’m just an outsider trying to show off? What if they whisper about me, just like they did before?” The memory, a sharp shard of glass, pricked at her. The last time she’d tried to connect, to be part of something, it had ended in bitter disappointment, a stark reminder of her perceived inadequacies.
