The scent of lavender and old paper, once a comforting embrace, now felt heavy with an unspoken dread. Grace bustled about the drawing-room, her movements jerky, her smile a brittle thing. Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows that seemed to stretch and writhe like anxious thoughts. The community event, the one Chardonnay had so enthusiastically championed, loomed. And with it, a creeping dread that had begun to coil in Grace’s stomach like a cold serpent.

Chardonnay, perched on the back of an armchair, her translucent form shimmering like heat haze, watched Grace with a furrowed brow. “You’re polishing that silver teapot like it owes you money, Gracie,” she chirped, her voice a tinkling bell. “And you haven’t looked me in the eye for a solid hour.”

Grace flinched, her hand faltering. “It’s just… a lot, Chardonnay. So many details. The invitations, the refreshments, making sure everything is perfect.” Her voice was thin, strained.
