The air in Blackwood had always tasted like damp earth and secrets, but lately, it was starting to taste like… well, like nothing at all. A bland, dusty nothingness that made my nose twitch with annoyance. My brambles, usually a magnificent, thorny testament to my power, were looking less like a formidable magical barrier and more like a sad, neglected hedge that hadn't seen a good trim in a century. Which, technically, it hadn't. But that wasn't the point. The point was the *zing* was gone. The magical sparkle, the terrifying aura, the general sense of “don’t mess with me or I’ll entangle you in my very being” – all of it was fading faster than a forgotten promise.

And then there was Lily. Oh, Lily. She was like a sunbeam that had accidentally tumbled into my perpetually twilight forest, all cheerful chirps and relentlessly optimistic eyes. She’d arrived, I’d grudgingly admit, with a rather noble goal – saving her village from some sort of creeping, yucky blight. But the *way* she went about it! Sneaking through my woods like she was on a Sunday stroll, humming little tunes that probably annoyed the very moss on the trees. Honestly, the audacity.

She’d stumbled, quite literally, over my deepest, darkest, thorniest secret. Not just that I was a witch, but a *bound* witch. My magic, this glorious, prickly force I’d wielded for… well, ages, was tethered to these wilting brambles. And the reason? A deal. A panic-induced, utterly mortifying deal made when I was probably younger and significantly less capable of dramatic pronouncements. Lily, with her blessedly persistent heart, had a knack for showing up at the most inconvenient times, usually with a hopeful, “So, about fixing the forest…”
