Chapter 4
Brambles and Blight
Lily stumbles upon the heart of Blackwood and the source of its magic: Amy, the Thorn Witch. She witnesses the dying brambles firsthand and realizes the forest's fate is intertwined with her village's plight.
The air in Blackwood tasted like damp socks and forgotten secrets. Not my favorite flavor, but it was the only one I’d known for centuries. Usually, the gloom was my comfort, a thick blanket woven from shadows and the rustle of thorny vines. But lately, it felt… thin. Like a threadbare sweater on a chilly evening. My brambles, my pride and joy, my very essence, were looking less like formidable, magic-infused defenses and more like a neglected garden patch after a particularly harsh winter. Droopy. Pathetic. And frankly, it was making me profoundly grumpy.
Then *she* arrived. A splash of sunshine in my perpetual twilight. Lily. The herbalist. The one with the ridiculously cheerful disposition and the uncanny knack for finding trouble – or, in this case, finding *me*. I’d heard the whispers, of course. Little birds with big mouths chirping about a creeping blight, a desperate village, and a mythical cure hidden deep within the forbidden Blackwood. Honestly, the audacity! As if my sad, wilting brambles were some kind of magical pharmacy.
I watched her from behind a particularly gnarled oak, trying to decide if I should unleash a torrent of thorny vines or just sigh dramatically and hope she’d get the hint. She was small, nimble, and her eyes, even from a distance, seemed to sparkle with an almost offensive amount of optimism. She navigated the undergrowth with a surprising ease, as if she’d grown up tripping over roots and dodging poisonous berries. Which, I supposed, was her job. Still. It was *my* forest. My domain. And she was stomping through it like a lost lamb, albeit a very determined lost lamb.
