The air in Blackwood had always tasted like damp earth and secrets, a scent I’d inhaled for longer than anyone could remember. She kept showing up, her basket overflowing with cheerful herbs and even more cheerful suggestions. “Amy,” she’d chirped, her voice like a robin’s song, “if we can just get these brambles to perk up, your magic will come back! And then we can *really* tackle this blight!” I’d usually just grumble, swatting away her well-meaning advice with a thorny branch, but a tiny, traitorous part of me had started to listen.
