Chapter 19
A Village Saved, A Witch Freed
The cure spreads from the revitalized Blackwood to Lily's village, banishing the blight. Amy, no longer bound, feels her magic surge, stronger and purer than before, a testament to her courage.
The air in Blackwood hummed, not with the usual, slightly unsettling rustle of thorns, but with a vibrant, thrumming energy. It was a sound I hadn’t heard in centuries, a melody that vibrated deep in my bones, making my grumpy old heart do a little jig. The brambles, once a sad, droopy mess, now stood tall and proud, their leaves a dazzling emerald, their thorns gleaming like tiny, wicked daggers. They weren’t just alive; they were practically bursting with *oomph*. And I, Amy, the Thorn Witch, felt it too. The prickle was back, but it wasn’t the sour, weary kind. This was a zesty, invigorating prickle, like a thousand tiny sprites doing cartwheels up my spine.
Lily, bless her relentlessly sunny disposition, was practically skipping beside me, her basket overflowing with the first fruits of our labor – plump, juicy berries that radiated a healthy glow. “Amy, isn’t it wonderful?” she chirped, her voice like a tiny bell. “The forest… it’s singing!”
I grunted, trying my best to maintain my usual level of formidable grumpiness, but it was a losing battle. “It’s adequate,” I allowed, though my eyes, I suspect, were betraying me with a distinct sparkle. “The thorns have finally decided to pull their weight.”
