The air in Blackwood had always tasted of damp earth and secrets, a perfume I’d worn like a second skin for longer than I cared to count. But lately, it was more like the stale breath of a forgotten crypt, tinged with the sickly sweet scent of decay. My brambles, my once proud, magnificent, and delightfully pointy companions, were looking less like formidable guardians and more like sad, droopy spaghetti. It was enough to make a witch want to sprout a second, even grumpier, head.

And then there was Lily. Oh, Lily. She of the impossibly bright eyes and the even more impossibly cheerful disposition. She’d flitted into my woods like a particularly determined butterfly, armed with a basket of herbs and a head full of dangerous optimism. She was looking for a cure for her village’s blight, a blight that seemed to be mirroring the slow, agonizing death of my beloved Blackwood. The nerve of some people, barging into my personal thorny domain with their earnest quests and their sunny smiles.

She’d stumbled upon it, of course. My secret. The one I’d guarded more fiercely than a dragon guards its hoard of shiny pebbles. I wasn’t just *a* witch; I was *the* Thorn Witch, bound by a deal so desperate, so utterly panicked, that it still made my teeth ache to remember it. My magic, my very essence, was tangled up with these wilting, pathetic brambles. And Lily, with her innocent snooping and her uncanny ability to find the one loose thread in any tapestry of secrecy, had pulled it all apart.
