The air in Blackwood had always tasted of damp earth and secrets, a flavour I quite enjoyed, thank you very much. But lately, it was starting to taste like disappointment. My brambles, usually a magnificent tapestry of thorny defiance, were looking less like a formidable defence and more like a forgotten pile of sad, droopy yarn. Honestly, it was enough to make a witch want to curl up and hibernate until the end of time.

Then, as if my already wilting pride wasn't enough, in waltzed Lily. Oh, she didn't *waltz* exactly. It was more of a determined, almost annoyingly bouncy stride, as if she were skipping through a meadow of daisies instead of the cursed, thorny depths of Blackwood. She was on a mission, of course. Always on a mission, that one. This time, it was some ghastly blight that was creeping through her village like a particularly nasty case of the sniffles. And naturally, she’d heard whispers. Whispers always found their way to Lily, like lost socks finding their way to the laundry room. Whispers about a cure, hidden deep within my wonderfully spooky, yet currently rather pathetic, forest. The audacity!

I’d tried to scare her off, naturally. Thrown a few phantom brambles her way, conjured a suitably menacing shadow that looked suspiciously like a particularly grumpy owl, and even let out a mournful sigh that I hoped would curdle her cheerful disposition. But Lily? Lily just blinked, adjusted her satchel, and offered me a small, hopeful smile. It was unnerving.
